Yes - it's true; Eventscorp have combined with AMA and MAWA in submitting an 'expression of interest' for the 2015 WMA Championships. EOIs had to be in by September 1, and Perth is in the hat alongside three European cities - London, Lyon and a twin-city bid from Poland. The next stage is to prepare a full bid by early 2011 after visits by WMA's hierarchy to inspect Perth's facilities. The final decision would then be made at the WMA General Assembly in Sacramento next July ... watch this space.
Track and Field on Tuesdays and Thursdays starts again on October 5. The Patron's Trophy - 14 events across the whole gamut of T&F begins later in October. The full programme is now available. Click the link at the bottom of the side panel to the right of this message.
The Dick Horsley trophies for the 10km race walk this year went to Kirt Johnson and Lynne Schickert. These were decided on an age-graded basis at the Racecourse event yesterday. Both winners were "very pleased" with their success. It is a special win for Lynne, who said yesterday "Dick was a founder member of WAVAC/MAWA; a world-class athlete, state mile champion at 19, and later an administrator with Athletics WA." She goes on "Dick died about 15 years ago, and I remember him with much affection as he helped me regain my strength after my major operation in 1990. He walked the short distance events with me, giving much encouragement to become fit again." We remember Dick today as these two great servants of the club take the trophy named in his honour.
The overall winner in the club's Cross Country championships at Jorgensen was Tom Waumsley, who was pushed hard all the way by M50 Trevor Scott. First lady home was Karen March. Age group medals went to many others; full results are on the results page. Vic Waters and Graeme Dahl were two others who starred on Sunday, but this time with their cameras. A great selection of photographs recording this major event in the calendar is available to view and download using the road gallery.
Lorraine Lopes, Bert Carse and Irwin Barrett-Lennard are the latest trio to set new state records. They were set in the 25km road running championships in June, but not previously reported as records. Lorraine (W70) ran 2:24, Bert (M65) 1:48 and Irwin (M80) 2:43. In addition, Lyn Ventris' world best time in the 20km state open walks championship (see below) is a World Record although not yet ratified. She beat the previous record by 9 seconds. Note the revised time (not 1:35:04 as originally reported).
Lyn Ventris and David Smyth made it a clean sweep for MAWA in the WA Open 20km Race Walk Championships. Lyn's time of 1:45:04 is a new world best time - awaiting confirmation and ratification. David took the men's title with a time of 2:10:04. It is not often that Masters athletes take State Open titles; great congratulations to both of you!
Over 30 medals, many of them gold, were safely stored in the baggage of the five MAWA athletes returning from Tahiti last week. Bjorn Dybdahl, Bev Hamilton, Bob and Lynne Schickert, plus Victorian resident Don Chambers did the state proud in the week long championships. Full results are in the track results section of the site. Well done to all five of you!
